Sarikei is known as - fruits basket of Sarawak - and one of the main supplier for vegetables and fruits for Central Region. One of the famous fruits is Sarikei Pineapple. It is for this reason Pineapple Festival was held annually in Sarikei town. During the festival, there are various activities organise by the organiser such as pineapple display competition, pineapple cooking competition, pineapple fashion show and many more. This will be an ideal time to visit Sarikei where you can experiences and sample the sweet and juicy pineapple fruits.

NANAS SARIKEI

In  1970s, farmers plant the pineapples in Sarikei, particularly in the Sg. Sawang, Parit Tengah, Parit Bugis, Sg. Salah, Sg. Sageng, Bukit Kinyau and some peatlands around Sarikei. The fruits sold at the Sarikei jetty to stopover express boats and ships from Kuching-Sibu-Sarikei. Express boats and ships’ passengers whom transit or had a final stop in Sarikei jetty buying pineapples and some will buy as a gift as “NANAS Sarikei” become favorites because the taste is so unique and delicious.

At that time, pineapple’s most popular cultivated species “Moris” now known as Nanas Sarikei In addition there are also species “Paun atau Madu” Pineapple.

PESTA NANAS SARIKEI

Sarikei Pineapple Festival is an event that has been manifested in the establishment of the Sarikei Division Tourism Task Group on February 12, 1998 and in the same time also has been appointed as the Pineapple Fruit Icon Sarikei.

However, “Pesta Nanas Sarikei” first edition was held in 2003. The Pineapple Festival has since been held by motivated "Agrofest" in accordance with the Sarikei Division, is famous for the diversity of agricultural products, especially tropical fruits.

“PESTA NANAS DAN BUAH-BUAHAN BORNEO 2016”

The Honourable Datuk Amar Abang Zohari Bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, Minister of Tourism Sarawak during the launch of the “Pesta Nanas” 2014, the festival has been rebranded to " PESTA NANAS DAN BUAH-BUAHAN BORNEO ". This is also in line with the vision to make the Sarikei Division as "The Food Basket of Sarawak".

At the same time making pineapple as the festival’s main focus in line with the Sarikei Division Administration to restore the glory of Sarikei pineapple cultivation in Sarikei as before. On the other hand, the concept of agricultural filing also been emphasized as the organization of Agricultural Exhibition and Showcase Agropreneur other than sports and entertainment activities.

AGROPRENEUR IN SARIKEI

Sarikei Division famous for its agricultural products and has become one of hub-based agricultural products especially in the central region of Sarawak. Products consist of a variety of local fruits, especially “Durian”, “Dabai”, lime, “Carvendish” Banana, pineapple, pepper including livestock.
